Good Reception opening up including Radio Australia

Very good reception tonight on all bands for me. Radio Australia (SIO=323) quite loud and clear on 11.695, featuring the "AM" programme and a report about a dead-wombat throwing competition in a school, really! Also thought I heard radio Cairo on 6290 Khz, not sure. A very clear station was Radio London "Big L" from Trintelhaven on 1395 good signal SIO=414, playing 50 and 60's oldies, I thought it was a pirate station until I heard the adverts!

So not such a good signal, quite a lot of interference and fading. Its only Radio 4 as well, so what? Well this signal is coming from Lisnagarvey in Northern Ireland see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lisnagarvey_transmitting_station. So pleased to be hearing at all. Its on a 10kw station! Thanks to my Welbrook antenna ALA1530, it was worth the money.

ICOM DSP - worth the money?

In a word. Yes. Fitting the ICOM-UT106 DSP is quick job, you just have to remove the case and plug it in. I was in a dilemma about whether to leave the leatherette case on it, but the bloke who sold it to me recommended that I keep it on to avoid shorting. In use its possible to configure the Noise Reduction (NR) Level, this can be set from 0-15. At the higher levels the sound signal sounds like its been broadcast underwater so I have it currently set on 5.

In practice its really good at getting rid of background hiss, white noise. Its not so good at the "buzzing" like interference that plagues some frequencies. So on balance worth the effort, and in combination with the synchronous AM mode of the R75 is helping me pull in some really faint stations.

6.305Khz: Radio Mazda? - Netherlands

Sounds like Radio Mazda from the ident. Playing a mix of rock and sixties. Lots of noise and fading. Coming from the Netherlands.

DSP - I bought one!

I bought a DSP (Digital Signal Processor) off ebay secondhand tonight. See above. Fitting it involves taking the case off the radio and messing about a bit with its innards, always good for a laugh! See below ** for a full explanation from the IcomAmerica site of what it does. Hopefully it will cut out even more noise, my new Welbrook antenna has done a good job so far, More news when I have fitted and tried it out.

**DSP capability

The DSP includes the following to give you superior receiver quality in your shack, vehicle or during DX'pedition.
*DSP is built in to U.S. models, but may be optional outside the U.S. Please check with your dealer.

Speaker Output ComparisonNoise reduction:
Pulls desired AF signals from noise. Outstanding S/N ratio is achieved, providing clean audio in SSB, AM and FM.

Automatic Notch filter:
This automatically minimizes beat signals and heterodynes while prese

rving the receive signal. Also, the notch frequency is automatically adjusted to follow interfering beat signals - for example, reducing interference from RTTY signals during SSB operation.
